As an openly gay man, it causes a significant amount of personal pain for me, when the church that I love says that homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.

United Methodists from around the world gathered for a convention earlier this year in Tampa, Florida, where they decided the future of the church and its official policy on gays and lesbians.

The church currently holds that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Progressive Methodists want to see that statement removed from church doctrine, while conservative evangelical Methodists want to retain the church’s traditional stance. Both sides clashed at the convention.
